Traveling on the Edo Highways: A Journey of Shogun and Princesses

The highways of Japan were improved by the shogunate government during the Edo period and used by people from all walks of life. They were also the stage for the processions of Japan’s ruling class. The processions of the shoguns and their princesses were particularly long and grand, and as a show of power, left a lasting impression on all who lived along the route. This exhibition will travel along the highways of Edo through materials related to the shogun’s official visits to Kyoto, pilgrimages to Nikko, and princesses’ travels from the capital.
