The Pioneers -Masters of Edo Painting-
- Dates
- 2020.6.2 (Tue)-2020.6.21 (Sun)
- Venue
- 1F Special Exhibition Gallery
In the Edo period, painters who broke with conventional wisdom and sought out the challenge of novel and unique forms of expression were active all over Japan, and they can be considered “pioneer” artists. As well as painters known for their radical, intense personalities, such as Ito Jakuchu, Nagasawa Rosetsu, Soga Shohaku, and Utagawa Kuniyoshi, among others, who have gained increased attention in recent times, the exhibition also includes challenging new expressions from artists such as Tawaraya Sotatsu, Ogata Korin, Maruyama Okyo, and others often described as “mainstream” in conventional histories of Edo-era painting. This exhibition introduces the uniquely characterful works of 35 pioneering painters selected from all over Japan, from Hokkaido in the north to Kyushu in the south. This special exhibition is ideal for 2020, when Tokyo will attract the world’s gaze.
