Hokusai and Hiroshige: The Mount Fuji Challenges / from the Edo-Tokyo Museum Collection [held at Okayama Prefectural Museum of Art]

Katsushika Hokusai’s Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, one of Japan’s most significant masterpieces of ukiyo-e prints, stunned audiences with its vivid blue colors and bold compositions. At the time, Hokusai was over 70 years of age, but still working tirelessly at painting and printmaking. Hiroshige Utagawa, on the other hand, was in his late thirties around the same time. He was no more than an ukiyo-e artist who created landscape prints, but had experienced no major success. How did Hiroshige manage to develop his own style in the shadow of Hokusai’s hit works?
This exhibition features representative works from the Edo-Tokyo Museum Collection, including all 46 images in Hokusai’s Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (There will be some exhibit changes), and Hiroshige’s The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido and One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. Through these works, the exhibition will go over the challenges taken on by Hokusai and Hiroshige, the two masters of ukiyo-e landscape prints.
